Discuss Star Trek Into Darkness

Very entertaining film. Here's why

  1. Great performances (particularly from Benedict Cumberbatch)
  2. Solid action scenes
  3. A clever, if flawed storyline
  4. Great visual effects
  5. Effective plot twists
  6. The Kirk and Spock dynamic
  7. Some funny scenes
  8. Plenty of emotion and depth

That's why I liked this film. Live long and prosper!

And diversity of thought is a good thing. I'm glad you enjoyed it, since films experiences are personal just like opinions. I find myself on the other side of the power curve on this one. However, since all of the criticisms of the film have been expressed by others, ad nauseum, I see no need to offer my own.

I really liked this one for all the same reasons you mentioned above. I also liked the USS Vengeance design. Too bad Star Trek Beyond was such a terrible follow-up. At least in my opinion.

I've enjoyed these new trek films. Haven't seen the original films.

I may be in a minority in that I loved the TOS films and the first couple of these reboots.

Yes this film had it's criticisms - e.g. "too emotional" Spock (which I personally had no issue with - Vulcan was destroyed, therefore this is, mentally, a very different character) and the ridiculous enhanced range, mobile transporter (never leave home without it 😁) - but those aside, as per the OP, it's entertaining enough and not, overall, a straight up copy of WoK as some claimed.

The one thing I wish they hadn't done though was the switched "... and always shall be, my friend" scene. The emotional feels were earned for that by the long history the TOS cast had - here it's almost like a cringeworthy parody...

I've loved all of the Kelvin timeline movies so far.

I'd probably say that in my opinion Into Darkness is the weakest of the three, but still above average for me. I think perhaps because of recycling an iconic villain comparisons are inevitably made and my expectations were naturally higher?

Well, other than the fact that one of the bad guys (Admiral Marcus) looked exactly like Buckaroo Banzai, I really liked the movie.

Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night.

I've enjoyed them all too. I'm a Star Trek fan from way back. The TV version. Into the Darkness is my favourite out of the three. Cumberbatch always the excellent actor.

Found it the weakest of the 3 new ones by a long shot but thats the thing with opinions

@mcse2000ca : I loved Star Trek Into Darkness even though it was a ST2 reboot (and a great one at that).

Benedict Cumberbatch was a great Khan. He didn't go over the top like Ricardo M. I think that BC's best scene is when he's in the brig talking to Kirk and Spock. When he's talking about his fellows who were in the other torpedo tubes, he turns to the wall so Kirk and Spock can't see that single tear running down his face.

@Damienracer : I loved it when Scotty got drunk and called Kirk "James T. Perfect Hair Kirk"

I especially love the part where Khan changes from a fellow with asian ancestry to a pasty british white dude that was a neat trick

@mcse2000ca grin but that was awesome because Khan looked EXACTLY like Benedict Cumberbatch!

I literally just fell asleep to it an hour in. I can't remember the last film I did that to. I like a lot of the older Star Trek films and TV shows, but the extremely fast pacing of this left me with no connection to any events or characters. Personally I don't find a story travelling at warp factor 9 and ludicrously overblown action scenes a good mix for the Star Trek universe.

You've literally just fallen asleep? You literally just sleep-typed your post?!

... Or you literally, as opposed to metaphorically, fell asleep watching this? 🤔

I'm sure you can work out that I typed after I'd woken up. Not even JJ Abrams would insert something as unbelievable as someone typing in their sleep...

Well maybe. :p
