That is, a film maker only has ten good films in him. This film was utter garbage. The jokes weren't funny and zombies are passé. Probably should have been released 10 years ago. I do appreciate that he wasn't shy about calling them ZOMBIES unlike some other moronic tv show that shall remain unnamed. Okay, I'll name it, The Walking Dead. I miss Down By Law Jarmusch or Dead Man Jarmusch.

I think 2 stars (4/10's equivalent on the tmdb scale) is probably slightly generous.

I wouldn't say it was altogether garbage but it certainly fell face first into a pile of sh*t ending!

I was enjoying the low key Bill Murray / Adam Driver take on a zombie apocalypse coming to town, the Tilda Swinton character was intriguing and them teaming up could have made for an interesting conclusion.

However the meta stuff was utterly senseless and, as far as I could tell, just there so people would go "cool, meta stuff..." and the Tilda Swinton "twist" was just garbage.

1 1/2 Stars for me...

I honestly don't recall QT ever saying that a filmmaker only has ten good films in him (or her). I thought he stated that he wanted to stop after his next one, so he could leave behind a "strong" filmography. I can't envision him retiring… it seems like a lotta fun to do what he does. He's a pretty good writer, so maybe he could do what he mentioned and write fiction instead.

As for the film, I did nod off on it once, but that was because of how I spend my time has changed... I mean, Jarmusch is like the king of the "slow crawl" movie, and this one was no exception. But it was entertaining. I agree that the Tilda Swinton character twist wasn't very good. I enjoyed the throw down toward the very end of the film between the two cops and the undead. It'll be interesting to see what Jarmusch does next.

Actually Tarantino has said in several interviews when asked why he wants to stop at his tenth and his answer is pretty much after ten films you are past your prime and you just start to make mediocre films. I just listen to his appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast and he reiterated that point. He actually made a comparison to how Muhammad Ali went out in his final years doing fights he probably should have not done and kind of tarnishing his career. I, for one, disagree with Tarantino's assessment but you will be hard pressed to find a film director that has more than 10 really good films to his credit.

OK, that's fine. I'm sure one could find some examples to refute QT's point.

Of course, this is all opinion, isn't it? And Muhammad Ali probably shouldn't have done a bunch of post-"Rumble in the Jungle" fights for the simple reason that he got damaged badly, trying to make up for lost time.

I think QT is just scared he will make something that, in his opinion, will be mediocre so he rather quit while he is on top like Michael Jordan. I am of the opinion you should keep going as long as you can but Jarmusch tries his damndest to change my mind with this garbage. The film is actually OK compared to most run of the mill films but for a film maker of Jarmusch's caliber, it is trash.

That Tarantino thing is funny.

It's like he thinks if he delays making films he can maintain the quality of his creative reservoir.

I'm not sure re ten films but of course all artists will have a creative peak era, e.g. someone like Woody Allen. Same with musicians - very hard to go past three or four really, really top albums. Maybe some exceptions but it's not like if these guys had delayed releasing albums and putting one out every five years say they'd still be putting out classics after twenty years...

I agree wholeheartedly. I think he has chosen that number (10) arbitrarily with no real reason to back it up besides what has happened up till now. I heard people used to talk about no one would ever break Babe Ruth's homerun record. If people have this attitude that 10 is the most that can be made with quality then it is a self fulfilling prophecy.
