Seržant Clay (Steve McQueen), který má "za pár" odejít do civilu, přesvědčuje svého kamaráda Maxwella Slaughtera (Jackie Gleason), vojáka z povolání, aby opustil armádu zároveň s ním, neboť je přesvědčen, že oni dva společně dokážou udělat díru do světa. Maxwell Slaughter is a kind, heavyset guy who has reached the rank of master sergeant in the army. Admired by handsome young Sgt. Eustis Clay, Slaughter forms a close bond with his peer. Clay hopes to convince Slaughter to join him in a business venture outside of the service, but, in the meantime, he introduces the older officer to the beautiful young Bobby Jo Pepperdine, inadvertently creating trouble for both men.

Eustis è un soldato americano intenzionato a escogitare qualsiasi cosa per fare quattrini e diventare un uomo di affari dopo il servizio nell'esercito. Vorrebbe coinvolgere nei suoi affari anche il suo amico, il sergente maggiore Slaughter, che invece ama la vita della caserma e non è intenzionato a cambiarla. La morte del suo cane prima e di Slaughter poi, convinceranno Eustis a rimanere nell'esercito come avrebbe fatto il suo amico.
