Item: Silencer

Language: en

Type of Problem: Design_issue

Extra Details: I added here the release date as seen on IMDB. I have no idea where the existing release date came from, so I am leaving it alone. But the date I added is of an unknown release type. There is no option for that, forcing a selection to be made. This seems poor to me,as TMDB is then representing data as true that is actually not known to be true at all. I understand that data of unknown or blank is not ideal, but I believe it to be far better than forcing unconfirmed data to be entered.

Thanks for your report! slight_smile

In general, I would say that's not at all advisable. If you don't know the full details of what you want to add to TMDb, just don't add it. You can't trust IMDb, as you can't trust any other un-official source - so don't copy/paste it if you're not sure about it. Nobody is forcing you to add unconfirmed data! The next person who comes across this entry might know the correct release date and how it was released - simple as that.

Specifically, I found a few sources that suggest it's a VOD/Digital release on September 4th:

It seems there was also a world premiere event at the Ahrya Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills, California, on August 30th:

and dozens of more like these ...

Do you want to make the changes on the entry?!? whale

Ok. So you would rather have no date vs just a date with no type? Seems odd to me, but I will do as you ask.

I changed the entry I added to Digital.

I feel that the forcing to enter unconfirmed data only happens because a type is forced. It is my opinion, although apparently disagreed with, that a release date without a type is better than no release date at all, or a release date with an assumed or unconfirmed type. Someone else might come along and know the type, meanwhile, users still had a date to use. That is only my opinion though, and as I said, I will do as you ask - if the type is not known, I will not add the release date.

If this date with no type is from an un-official source like IMDb, yes. If you're not sure about something, don't add it. That's why I always try to find official sources. However, it's not possible for every entry, especially for older movies or tv episodes. And then it's better to leave it blank than to add a - possibly wrong - date.

I changed the entry I added to Digital.

Just a note: When you add release dates, there's this option "Language". We only use this option for content in countries with more than one language. For example, Switzerland. You can have a German release in the part of Switzerland where people speak German. But you can also have a French release in the French part, and perhaps also an Italian release in the Italian part. That's when we use this language option. Or Canada - you can have a French and an English release. We don't use it for countries like the US - you can just skip over this option for most films.

I think so. But maybe other moderators think differently? I'll keep this discussion open for other mods to read and maybe comment on. dolphin

RE: the date from IMDB. So if IMDB listed a type and I added that, what makes that any more or less correct than one with no type on it? Unless you are saying that IMDB is not a valid source, that is different then. But there are often no types listed for release dates.

It is still my opinion that a release date is not any more or less correct with or without a type on it. I can understand disallowing IMDB as a source, but that would be aside from having a release date type or not. It seems very odd to disallow a release date on the sole reason of there is no type.

Please do share ideas though, I can share only my opinion, that does not make me any more right or wrong from anyone else.

I mean exactly that: IMDb is not a valid source. Like TMDb, IMDb is only a database, not a producer or distributor of content. We always say to contributors: Don't copy data blindly from IMDb, because it could be wrong (especially for content that's not in English). I understand that it's so much easier to copy the data from IMDb, and a lot of users just do. But that's not the way we prefer. We actually want verified data from official sources, such as credits, official pages, press material etc.

Please do share ideas though, I can share only my opinion, that does not make me any more right or wrong from anyone else.

That's why I keep this discussion open. poodle
