Discusión Summerland

It's probably a combination of my leanings towards Antinatalism and my being a guy who, as such, will never have/be able to have the childbearing urge; but I felt Vera's decision to leave Alice was cruel. She'd seduced her, they'd fallen in love (and Alice never gave up on that love), but because she wasn't able to give up the urge to breed she broke it off.

Vera was obviously well off (her car) and in those days plenty of well-to-do ladies had paid companions - I can't believe all of those were just doing what was in the job description! She could have easily found a "donor" (she was gorgeous) and claimed to have been led astray/raped on a foreign holiday and Alice could then have posed as her companion. They wouldn't have been able to live publicly as lovers, but behind closed doors...

Instead, she went into a marriage that was obviously not one of love (from Frank's description) and poor Alice was left alone. No wonder she went so irascible!

Mind you, I guess then we wouldn't have had the same emotions this lovely film evokes.

On another topic, I'm sick of the current trend of trying to combat racism by making it seems as if history was much more ethnically diverse. I work in inner-city schools that are less diverse than the school in this movie. I can imagine kids in the future thinking there never was such a thing as racism as all the films and shows set in the past show such well-integrated societies.

I completely agree. I get very angry when history is lied about to suit woke agendas. The conversation about being a lesbian with a fourteen year old boy would NEVER have happened in that era. Film makers are trying to force feed society with gay storylines in the hope that it will become unremarkable - but from what I see of gay people they would be horrified to be unremarkable - so they are shooting themselves in the foot somewhat. On virtually every show I watch that has contestants you can guarantee that gay people will find some way of mentioning that they are gay - they seem to require that attention - so if gayness becomes ordinary I think that will outrage them. Acceptance of anything cannot be forced - it must happen willingly otherwise it is plain and simply bullying and dictatorship - this will increase racial hatred not lessen it.
