Sergey Loznitsa has very bleak view of the humanity and his movies reek of brutal misanthropy while he shows how humans are capable to do their worst without pity or remorse. Ever since I watched his incredible My Joy, I think his best so far, I try to watch his feature films when I can. His movies are not a standard characters driven stories with clear plot structure and the usual hero journey. It resembles more documentary style of filmmaking, a dry and neutral news report. There are no main characters, mostly non professional actors, just a collection of a scenes loosely connected between themselves with a main theme. His movies are uncomfortable watching experience, full of real life horror and despair, very cold and emotionless. But once you start you can't look away, you feel like Alex DeLarge from Clockwork Orange during that famous scene of aversion therapy, tied on a chair with your eyes fixed not to close or blink. Not a lot of directors these days dare to do what he does. Obviously it doesn't bring a lot of viewers that prefer the pyrotechnical spectacles of a pure escapism (who doesn't? it's great). But sometimes you have to watch movies like that too. If only just to bring you back to reality.
