same here, wanted to make thread it's unwatchable, i could force myself to see one hour but could not force to see last third, it screams low budget, they didn't even try to make other planet look different, you must have really wild imagination to not see they are walking through regular forest, why they didn't at least make sky and colors different? i don't think one big moon in sky can make it, also the slow pace it's killing it. I mean Cube was low budget but you would not even notice it and compared to this trash it's masterpiece, I gave it 4/10

Anyone reading this thread should disregard the last two comments that smack of spoil impatient millennial dribble. (Unfortunately the young ones just get so bored so easily these days). Seriously, if you're referencing Cube as a comparison then you don't truly understand what real Sci-Fi looks like or sounds like or reads like.

This film is an excellent example of a low budget, realistic, drama Sci-Fi. It's not an action Sci-Fi. It's actually very reminiscent of some of the old classics where space craft are quite mechanical and don't have 3D holographic control panels. Anyway, there's not even many space scenes. It's a story of - can you guess? - that's right, prospecting. No kids, it is not not a Western. It is however, analogous to the pioneering days of young western cultures in those times when technology was young and you had to do some hard work to make a living instead of sitting around complaining about how boring everything is.

If you're an impatient millennial then go watch Avatar again where the forests aren't too much like Earth's and where you can see lots of pretty colours. Didn't hear any Star Wars fans complaining about all the ferns that are just like Earths (because they are) - Maybe too caught up in all the explosions and lasers to notice.

and please don't give me some bullshit about millenials, i am most likely older than you and watch plenty of drama to meet your hipster/snob quota, i mentioned Cube (which it's really claustrophobic thriller, not really sci-fi) because it was first low budget movie which came to my mind, but OK Moon had also relatively small budget and was great movie, The Signal was OKish, Timecrimes was great, One point O was good and while I didn't enjoy Primer it was at least watchable compared to this trash

Can you remember TV without colour? Life without mobile phones? The word "hipster" wasn't invented until i was in my mid 30s. When I say classics I mean 2001, TXH1138, Alien, The Thing and so on.

My point is, if you want to start a discussion about how boring something is then head on over to IMDB where they thrive on it. Try to let this institution become something more than a complaint register.

I have to agree with you @split.infinitive in that it was a good movie. I was pleasantly surprised.

It is slow moving and won't be for everyone, but there were interesting visuals, great central performances from the two main characters and an excellent score.

I agree with the OP. This was on a list of SF movies made this century that were (supposedly) underappreciated. I made it about half way thru.

I don't usually comment on moves I haven't seen till the end but this deserves some commentary.

Perhaps it is explained later in the movie but it hardly matters; you can't NOT explain the dramatic world the audience is entering. What is the motivation for the father and daughter? Why are these 'gems' valuable? What does 2 cycles mean? I'm a person of ordinary powers of observation and listening and I didn't have a clue what was going on. Then I'm in a B Western in space. Except I'm not in space. I'm in a forest in Canada or the US North West. Why is Pedro Pascal speaking like a riverboat gambler? Why are guns hand cranked?

World building isn't a simple as getting high and scribbling down your weirder musings. And when one is telling a story the audience needs to have some investment in the characters. For this you need to have some idea where the characters have come from and what they are trying to achieve. A photo of your dead mum in a scrapbook doesn't cut it.
