Discuss The Mule

I have always thought the world of Dianne Wiest - a very good actress who, in Bullets over Broadway, gave one of the funniest comic performances I have ever seen, but was good value in anything, not just her memorable collaborations with Woody Allen.

But in The Mule, she is awful. The scenes with Clint's estranged family are poorly written to start with, but every time she is on screen, the film staggers case to unwatchable. Her final moments in the movie are staggeringly bad - it's hard to know whether the script, Clint's direction or Wiest's performance, or a combination, is to blame but it saddened me to see a once outstanding actress reduced to such sloppy cornball nonsense. It was also borderline ridiculous to accept her as Clint's ex-wife - there's eighteen years between them and it shows.

I hope that Dianne Wiest still has a great role in her future because she deserves it.

MY WIFE IS 17 YEARS OLDER THAN I...GENERALLY OLDER GUYS ARE WITH YOUNGER WOMEN WHENEVER THEY CAN.I CANT ARGUE THE ACTING PORTION.

Well, that is certainly a fair point. But Eastwood and Wiest look and seem to be of entirely different generations. Somebody like June Squibb or Olympia Dukakis would have seemed more appropriate casting as a long-ago wife of Clint's, who - while still a cool and iconic figure - is really looking his age these days.

The whole family angle was pretty poor. They couldn't stand to be in the same room as him. He hadn't given a damn about them for decades due to indifference and actually chooses prison over any chance to reconcile with his family, but the takeaway message of the film seems to be "family comes first"!? A pretty muddled element of the film but I strangely enjoyed the journey.
