Discuss Triangle of Sadness

Enjoyed the film and was sad to learn that actress Charlbi Dean who played the influencer/model Yaya passed away just months ago.

Makes the ending feel more sad. I really did want her to go up the elevator once she was there rather than wait for Abigail.

Kinda symbolic, that elevator to nowhere. It could go up, or maybe down. Was sad to hear about Charlbi Dean, it is a tragic accident what happened to her.

The ending is open on purpose, the movie is allegorical and symbolic. Everyone is free to understand it as they want. Personally, I like that Abigail's moral dilemma is unresolved. Makes you wonder what you would've done in her spot. Would hope Abigail decided to be pragmatic and accept Yaya's offer. Yaya seems not to hold a grudge if she sees a benefit for herself. I do think that she would've kept her promise, that it was not just talk. Yaya could become abusive towards Abigail eventually, but that's not personal, it's just her nature. Abigail's problem is the power shift, it seemed that the possibility of losing power hit her too hard and she seems overwhelmed by it. It puts a light over the fact that you can't just give power to someone that is coming from the very bottom. Because they are humiliated every day of their life, the power corrupts them more easily. You can see it everywhere in our world, working class people that are given big power would probably become tyrants. Toilet manager, lol. It's even more humiliating than just calling her janitor or a cleaning lady.

Carl's ending is even more enigmatic. We see him run through the jungle, like he is running for his life. We don't understand why, but it's probably because he knows about the resort too. So the question, why is he running in such way? Is it because he runs to reunite with Yaya? Or maybe he is escaping the established matriarchy the first chance he got? Carl seems like a conformist and opportunist, although he probably thinks about himself as idealist. So since he is trying to survive on the island he just adopts to the situation. But the first opportunity that he can escape and return to the normal world, the world in which the Men are still in control, he is suddenly full of terror and disgust of what he was forced to do. So he runs, like is a victim of a killer that got away, like a soul that tries to escape Hell. Even if Yaya survived, I think it's ended between them. One hopes that Carl learned his lesson, but he would just probably find another woman that abuses him. Because, well, it's his nature.

Good movie, the more you think about it the better it becomes.

Uh the ending for Carl was none of those things for me. I took it as Abigail killed Yaya and Carl heard Yaya scream. And so is running to her. To me the expression on his face and franticness of his running said that that was what was happening.

Not sure how could he hear her scream, it was the other part of the island. Even if Abigail returned and told him, I wouldn't expect such reaction from him. Plus this movie is a dark satire with symbolic elements, I wouldn't think the movie ends with something that realistic. Nah, I am sticking with my interpretation.

What parts of the movie arent realistic though? Like, what parts of the movie where things are shown that are purely symbolic and don't actually make much sense (didnt actually happen that way)? Maybe Im just forgetting them..?
