Discuss The Green Mile

The Green Mile was recommended to me when I asked for tearjerker films.

The part that really got to me was John Coffey's execution. An innocent and good man is going to die! And those who knew his innocence and his goodness were the ones who (reluctanctly) put him to death.

While they were wheeling his body away in those underground tunnels, I was hoping that Mr. Coffey would come back to life then and there. I was wrong. At the end, when the 100-year-old Paul Edgecomb was walking with his female friend to the woodshed, I thought that he would show her that this was where John Coffey was staying. Nope, but it was the mouse, Mr. Jingles.

I think Cinemax is showing this this month...the ending still "gets" to me..as Paul says at the end, he seems to be punished for allowing John Coffey, an innocent man, to die...arguably he can live til he's 200 at this rate.

"On the day of my judgment, when I stand before God, and He asks me why did I kill one of his true miracles, what am I gonna say? That it was my job? My JOB?"

Everyone owes a death and we all take that green mile sooner or later.

This movie is a tearfest all the way up to the ending. The music doesn't help in that regard and Paul is just to damn likeable not to root for or feel for him as he lumbers on through life. Sad that he killed God's gift and losing everyone he knew. Praying for death like a wandering stranger
