It is a great film. My top this year so far.

And it was based upon a true story.

I agree. I really enjoyed it too. Of all the movies nominated for best picture at the Oscars I think Green Book deserved to win.

When it was over, I just said "wow, I actually like a 'best picture' again."

Yes, I enjoyed this one too. I just got around to seeing it yesterday. I am a fan of most things with Ali's performances though, from Luke Cage to Moonlight.

I think Ali is one of the best new actors around. He gave excellent performances in Luke Cage, Moonlight, True Detective and Green Book and seemed completely different in each.

I'm late to the party, but its slow at work and found this streaming on Showtime! What a GREAT film! Comedy directors have really come in on their own the last few years and Peter Farrelly is no exception..great story telling and an emotional film without going overboard. I think some recognition needs to go to Viggo Mortensen..he's so damn versatile and really played his character perfectly! Perfect for this time of year and glad I caught it around now! smile

I liked the film a lot and Mahershala Ali was terrific and definitely deserved his Oscar. Still, I think Spike Lee was right to say that this is another DRIVING MISS DAISY, written by white people for white people. Viggo Moretenson was the lead, not Ali. Ali's Oscar was for a supporting role.

The two leads really made it. This could have died in other hands with the lack of beleivability, particularly the almost immediate around the scene in the baths (and subsequently sharing a hotel room) and the closing scene. But it was saved from being a trainwreck and just came out as a very solid feelgood film.

I was personally moved by it because as a kid in the 90s I visited the US and was driven half a day away from New Jersey to a gated community somewhere (which I now suspect was likely due south). On being driven into the community I saw a sign at the roadside saying "N-word, don't let the sun set on you here".

I wasn't old enough to completely grasp the situation, but had enough sense to know that this must have been the property of a diseased, insecure and repellant mind and decided I'd never visit the US again. Over the years I thought I'd maybe been harsh on the US by tainting it with the same brush as one lunatic in a gated community. But it's only on seeing this film I see reference to a "sunset town" and understand that this was, and possibly still is, a commonplace attitude amongst a significant part of the population. I'll be happy to never set foot there again.
