Item: The African Queen
Language: en-US
Type of Problem: Incorrect_content
Extra Details: The African Queen premiered December 26, 1951 (so it would qualify for the '51 Oscars). It is recorded that way in the TMDB release dates. Why is it listed as a 1952 film?
(Pardon me if TMDB maintains rules for release dates which classify this film as being 1952. I tried searching for such rules but didn't find any. )

Our guidelines for release dates are here. The first theatrical release date entered (if there is one) will determine the year.

Okay, that explains it then. Under rules where a "limited" or "theatrical" release always trumps a "premiere" (even though film premiers are chronologically earlier), "African Queen" would be 1952 even though it was first shown in 1951.
I would have to quibble with those rules, though. Strictly interpreted, a premiere release date almost never counts. Only in the extremely rare case when a film is premiered but never goes on to a theatrical release would the premiere date count under those rules. That just doesn't make sense to me. But of course TMDB can set its rules however it wants.
Cheers!
