They said they even looked in the basement. He was a big guy so couldn't have been hiding anywhere small. Unless the mother was correct and he found a spare key lying around?
I didn't mind the film, obviously unhappy endings aren't for everyone (it's frustrating, for sure) but it was totally unexpected.

I assume he had a key and moved around whenever he felt. And the 3rd act was just poorly written and done. Had nothing to do with the unhappy ending.
