Discuss Joker

I don't understand the point of this film - why would you take such a well known character - place him in Gotham - introduce Thomas Wayne and his family and then after a brief history of their connection simply abandon it in favour of a failed stand up comic's descent into insanity. It makes no sense. I was expecting the first half hour to document the Joker's past and then to document his rise to criminal mastermind. It seems to me that the film makers used the joker character to ensure that fans of the Batman franchise would turn up to see it - if they did they were doomed to disappointment. The acting was good - but this film would have been more successful if they had simply told the story of a failed stand up comic set in the present day who ended up a psychopath and simply called it "The Comedian".

The filmmakers definitely seem wed to the whole Bruce Wayne/Joker mythology. As a contrast, I liked how the Marvel Studios people, after acquiring creative control over Spidey, didn't even bother to dredge up ol Uncle Ben in their first two films with the character.

I think this movie should not be seen as part of the DC universe but rather as a movie in the vein of Taxi Driver,Clockwork Orange ,King Of Comedy and Fight Club. The whole Gotham City /Wayne/Joker story line is used rather as a backdrop than the main focus of the film it's not so much a comic book movie but rather uses the comic book trope. It tells a story about loneliness, mental disease,a journey into madness and violence,a corrupt,ill-equipped and inadequate system with all kinds of inequality, a criticism of a biased sensationalist agenda driven mass media using the comic book movie as metaphor.

It's an origin story. Please don't be impatient. Allow time for the story to unfold. The anticipation, is part of the experience. Human nature wants a beginning, middle and an arc to the resolution of an end. That's a far less interesting experience.
