On the surface it does seems like 1982's "The King of Comedy" in Batman Universe clothes...though I suspect they're different enough that the producers et al won't get sued.
I think it's an incredibly weird tribute to Scorsese's films. That being said, all I could think was this movie is "dangerous" and all because there might be a generation of people that aren't familiar with either Taxi Driver _or _King of Comedy, which I kinda hard to believe but believable.
What also hurt the movie is that it felt like there were three different endings thrown together because they couldn't decide which one they wanted.
it's basically Taxi driver meets Fight Club, but I guess it's OK for people who missed these both, though not very original if you are familiar with them, but nonetheless interesting
I can't help thinking maybe Shannon would be better choice, he can play crazies better

Shannon doesn't strike me as being a psychotic hyperactive clown kinda guy or a Joker maybe the abusive stepfather. He was great as Zod though but I'm not seeing him as a trickster psycho.

you should check Take Shelter or Bug and from what I remember him in other movies he pretty much always or very often play guys with (mental) issues, definitely more than Phoenix, way further from normal characters than Phoenix plus violence in Joker was quite subtle even if you think he doesn't have physique for it, not that skinny Phoenix here was more macho
SHANNON WAS THE BEST PART OF THE SHAPE OF WATER...THAT SHIT ABOUT A GENTLEMAN WASHINGHIS HANDS BEFORE OR AFTER PISSING,NEVER BOTH CAUSE BOTH DENOTES A CHARACTER FLAW AND THE DELIVERY...STAYS WITH ME.

Yeah, I definitely see The King of Comedy in there with De Niro in it... and the protagonist living with his mother, wanting to make it as a stand-up. I didn't mind the references to this and to Taxi Driver at all. Those are great, classic films in my opinion and they deserve that type of homage.
