In southern France, in a quiet little town, the mayor, who also owns a castle with some cattle, is in the wine cellar with some other people: the pharmacist, the veterinary, and some of his employees. As they are drinking wine, they hear a terrible noise and the heat's getting higher and higher. They don't realize what's happening: when they come out of the cellar, they realize that everything has burned, and all the buildings are destroyed...

À une époque indéterminée, dans le Sud de la France, Emmanuel, maire d’un petit village et propriétaire du château de Malevil, se rend dans sa cave afin de lire tranquillement une lettre de son fils parti en Australie. Il est alors interrompu par quelques concitoyens accompagnés du pharmacien et du vétérinaire, qui souhaitent lui soumettre un problème d'aménagement local. Sont également présents : Momo, un jeune homme un peu attardé, et La Menou, sa mère, servante du domaine. Soudain, une terrible et bruyante déflagration les projette tous à terre, détruisant une bonne partie du cellier d’Emmanuel. Une chaleur insupportable s'abat alors sur les lieux. Tout ce remue-ménage cesse curieusement quelques minutes plus tard. Les rescapés restés longtemps sans rien dire commencent à émerger et se décident à sortir pour constater l’étendue des dégâts. Dehors, tout n’est que ruines et désolation...

Das Dorf Malevil wird überraschend Opfer eines Atombombenabwurfs. Nachdem der Schock einigermaßen überwunden ist versucht man sich wieder neu zu organisieren und eine überlebensfähige Gesellschaft zu schaffen. Bald trifft man auf weitere überlebende mit denen man handelt betreibt. Allerdings verläuft diese Begegnung nicht lange friedlich.

Egy francia falu, Malevil életéről szól a film az atomkatasztrófa után. A falusiak egy csoportja a helybéli nagybirtokos borpincéjében éli túl a robbanást. Azután meg kell küzdeniük a kóbor városlakókkal, akik a termésükre vetnek szemet, valamint egy másik túlélő csapat diktátorával is. Amikor ezeket a megpróbáltatásokat sikerrel kiállták, helikopterek jelennek meg a falu felett, és a hatóságok kényszerrel elszállítják az összes túlélőt.
