Much as I approve of this film, I don't understand how they thought it was a good idea for him to get off with what he did- Ok, I know it happens in real life, so maybe that's why, but still...

I don't think he actually got away with raping Jared, without any consequences. I think he impersonated a college guidance-counsellor and outed Jared as gay to his parents because he was afraid that Jared would report the rape to the college administration, and he wanted to make it look like it was consensual sex because Jared was gay. I think that Jared's father did report him to the college administration after Jared told him about it.
