Perhaps the best performance in the film, although it is a shame he has relatively little to do in the second half of the movie. One of if not the first, African-American actors to be granted principal roles in major movies, actually predating Sidney Poitier by several years. He was a strong screen presence and it is sad that he passed away at a tragically early age.
