Soooo I like creepy slow burning films like The Witch, which this obviously takes some inspiration from, but wow this one was weird. The cinematography was great, fantastic locations. And so was the acting, seems like this is the leads first role and she was better than half of what Hollywood has to offer as 'actors' no a days. But wow this got weird and freaky fast. You can look at it two ways. The supernatural way, Aulburn sees that she has dark powers, she accepts the devil's mushroom, drowns her baby, drowns herself, is reborn. She gets instructions from her dead mother (also a witch) to cook the baby. Eating her baby seals her contract with the devil, she goes full witch and bursts in flames on a mountain top after accepting her new change. Basically killing off the rest of her humanity.

The mental illness explanation. She supposedly spent her whole teenage years alone, as an outcast, and continues to live like this. That's not healthy for any human being, living in almost complete isolation. Not to mention she was obviously raped in the past, hence the baby, and than betrayed and raped again. Hearing her dead mother could just be in her head. The plague could have actually killed the villagers and not her. The plague was everywhere in Europe. She killed her baby because of the mushrooms she took. And the whole eating the child and seeing her mother was all in her head after realizing what she had done. The bursting into flames symbolized her death.

I think it's a story of trauma, isolation, and pain. I also read online that some people think her baby was dead the whole time, considering she cant breastfeed her and she leaves the baby alone for extremely long periods of time. I also found it very interesting that when she was masturbating in bed it seemed like their was a presence behind her pounding away and making huffing noises. Could have been the devil. Maybe she was impregnated before by him. Many theories can work. Def left open to interpretation by the audience.
