Discuss Mandy

The critics falling over themselves about the greatness of this film should have clued me that this would be another "Heredity". No not in plot or in style, but an in an empty shell of a film with nothing to invest in. "Heredity" at least had great acting and characters even if it went nowhere and took 2.5 hours to get there.

Reviews on IMDB are as mad as the pro critics. They call this a "Grindhouse masterpiece". Well, your typical grindhouse film did not run 2:00 freakin hours!! It did not bore you with long drawn out shots of nothing. The gore was plenty and unlike this film not muted by poor lighting design (at least not on purpose).

"The Neon Demon", "Heredity", and now "Mandy" enter my worst horror films of the 21st Century list.

Its subjective. I enjoyed it immensely, as I did Hereditary. Its nice to get something new that dosent include a bunch of jump scares. I think Hereditary was better acted and had more depth and character development than Mandy. But than again they are two different type of films. I wouldnt call Mandy a "Grindhouse masterpiece" thats for sure. It had great visuals/amazing cinematography and a fantastic soundtrack and sequences that basically seemed straight from a fairy tale. Mandy is just a simple by the book revenge film, its also a slow burner. I can see how the general public wont be very accepting of it. But I think it will find a small cult following over the years.

It bad moments but I think my big issue was it dragged. At least to me. Should have been 80-90 minutes. And also all the fight scenes were shot in the dark. This eliminated the gore factor, or greatly reduced it. The end left me thinking "Okay now Nic is the big bad crazy person (thanks to the super LSD laced drink he just had to try in the biker cave)." Anyway it wasn't the "thrill ride" over the top non stop crazy trip I felt I had been promised. It was like a really bad trip (as us old folks used to say)!!

"Heredity" was great till the last ten minutes when the reveal was so cliche it ruined what came before it. I hate open ended films, but in this case I would have rather it ended with the kid climbing the stairs to the attic and then going to credits rather than the cabal of witches thing they came up with. Before that, it was a great study in mental illness running through a family (from the mother's side). Course once dad burst into flames we knew something more was going on but again, the very end just ruined it for me. I felt like "All this for THAT??"
