Dyskusje Mortal Kombat

No but I had an absolute riot watching it.

It was very, very stupid. But if you accept that and take it on it's own terms it's so much fun and is exactly the kind of Mortal Kombat movie I'd have dreamed of back when I was a kid. Paul WS Anderson can have his tacky girly version back, we don't need it any more. Not that we ever did.

This actually has the intention of embodying the game. It doesn't sanitize it. It's gorey as hell. It comes up with a reason for the characters to be able to throw fireballs and shoot lasers out of their eyes. It's a silly reason but it works in the context of the film. And it is a silly film.

The choreography is way better than Andersons' and interweaves the moves and deaths from the games in really well. I like that Scorpion and Sub Zero were much more integral to the narrative rather than the wordless henchman they were in the 90s version. They are probably two of the games most popular characters.

It is a strange idea to introduce a new character for the protagonist and I rather they hadn't but it's not like the other characters don't get plenty of screen time. And I think it was a good idea to hold certain big characters back so the series doesn't play it's whole hand straight away and we have something to look forward to in the sequel.

Given the reviews I really was expecting this to be unwatchable. But it was a nice surprise.

Was it big? Was it clever?

Unless John Holmes most famous appendage had a brain of it's own, it almost certainly wasn't clever

Alas, neither Holmes nor his appendage made an appearance in the film. Though said appendage might make for quite a menacing looking Mortal Kombat character. I certainly wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one of it's fatalities.

Dorothiea "Seka" Patton was one of the few to walk away from such an encounter, alive to tell the tale. More seriously though, Just, the decision to dig up Mortal Kombat for a cinematic adaptation was even more bizarre than Netlix dusting off Masters Of The Universe..... As entertaining as all of this stuff was in it's heyday, do either really have enough of a fanbase here in '21 to warrant further films or/and TV shows?

Mortal Kombat became big again several years ago as Mortal Kombat 10 revitalized the franchise and was a hit. MK 11 continued the trend. Both receiving excellent reviews. This is probably why they made the film. I did assume the film was a flop but when I looked up to see if there was any chance of a sequel I was surprised to see it did well, taking into account it was released during the pandemic. It's box office take was good for pandemic time and apparently it was huge on HBO Max.

Combine it's current popularity with the nostalgia craze and it seems quite an obvious choice for a movie. And it looks like they are making a sequel. Careful, spoilers for this one in that article.

They do seem to be making a lot of video game movies recently and there are a lot that seem to me to be a lot riskier than an established franchise that already had a (bafflingly) popular adaptation back in the 90s. Rampage or Monster Hunter being examples. But also Tomb Raider, which, despite the recent three games being superb, supposedly lost money on all three of them. I don't understand that given the amount of people I hear rave about them but apparently Tomb Raider is not popular at the moment.
