Diskuter Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile

This film didn't delve, at all, into the why, why Ted did what he did.

It does not mention Ted's girlfriend before Liz. The upper class young lady who rejected him. His humiliation. How his victims resembled her or, at least, the image in his mind of her. How he took out his anger at being rejected in violence against these innocent women.

When he repeated so often, "don't leave me", it was Bundy-speak for "don't reject me like she did."

Which is NOT to say anyone other than Bundy is responsible for his actions. Relationships end all the time, no justification to go out and kill people.

But the mechanics of his warped sense of entitlement are somewhat explained by his resentment for being mediocre and longing for the spotlight, whatever the cost.

Why did Ted indulge in this sort of recreation.... The 70s were a different era, where one's entertainment options were sparse compared to the present. Video Games, instant porn, and unlimited TV via the miracle of cable were decades away. Thus, a fella had to stretch his ingenuity to it's extreme when it came to devising new forms of fun

I can't believe you actually wrote this - "Its", not "it's."

All kidding aside, my better judgment says it isn't a joking matter. This is a monster who returned weeks after killing someone to have sex with their dead and decomposing bodies, some of them headless; a guy who burned the head of one of his victims in his girlfriend's fireplace. This behaviour is hardly a "new form of fun" worth cultivating, especially when we're still talking about a human being who was killed having done nothing to the perp other than look vaguely like the woman who rejected him.

Anyone in the camp that would just laugh this off or ridicule me for being too PC, well, so be it, feel free to ignore/block me and/or just not have me as a friend.

I will still hope that you or someone you love does not end up being killed in this way; and that, if such a thing did ever happen to you, that others would not joke about it.

I watched it with the notion that we were going to get the idea as to why this man could trick a nation into thinking he was innocent for so long, use his charm and wit to escape the police several times, and why these women fell for his every move and felt safe up until their last breathe.

The movie was brilliant in that way because it did exactly that, it made the alluring Ted Bundy reach out through the screen, and I found myself almost rooting for him for a brief moment, forgetting who he was. Afterwards I wanted to take a shower because I felt disgusted. Mission accomplished I guess?

America (Nixon administration) had invested heavily in demonizing certain people (anti-war hippies, blacks and, yes, there's plenty of documentation on this), but Ted was a white, male, Republican, law student, so he couldn't be the bad guy. His girlfriend told the police "my boyfriend's name is Ted, he drives a tan Beetle, and he's been coming home with women's underwear and house keys that are not mine/his/ours...you should check him out." Had they followed this up, tried those keys in the doors of the victims' homes, they'd have had him in Seattle, before his madness spilled into Oregon, California, Utah, Florida, and who knows where else in between. But, nah, he's a straight-laced guy, we're looking for monsters.

And, after they finally caught him (poetically enough, by matching the key from the Kent abduction to the handcuffs on DeRonch's wrist), he escaped...not once, but twice. If he was being treated how some people are treated by police, he'd have been on 24-hr lock down. But no, he's waltzing around in the library, shackle-free, and free to just jump out the window.

And after they caught him, he was left unguarded in his cell again, no shackles, no monitoring.

Some people are being shot dead in a hail of bullets for "reaching" for their ID. This raping, murdering, cannibal, necrophiliac sick f u c k got pass. After pass. After pass.

So, that is part of how this man tricked a nation. Racism.

And it's really important to recognize that racism hurts everyone, including white people. All the victims WE KNOW OF were white women, who died at the hands of a white man who should have been picked up long before the bloody trail ended in Florida, or should never have escaped from out west. And damn sure shouldn't have been able to escape a second time once he was proven to be a flight risk, in addition to and on top of the seriousness of his crimes - he wasn't on charges of a busted taillight or failing to signal a lane change.

Of course it was racism. It's a huge stain in the American justice system's records. One of many. The sad part is that law enforcement continue to this day to be stricken by prejudice and narrow mindedness. I watched Detroit and felt sick to my stomach. Now I'm watching The Red Line and all these police shootings on social media just made me realize one thing; the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Sorry to quote this long post, but YES!! I agree with all of this. I was thinking the exact same thing when I watched the other Netflix doc on the Ted Bundy tapes. Law enforcement people were just so nonchalant about making sure this dude was secured and guarded, like "Oh what could he do?" I found myself thinking the same about how other demographics would be treated in comparison, if they were even accused of something half as serious as what Bundy did.

It's fair to point out how racism played into him being able to commit more atrocities after he escaped the second time. I know it was the 70's, but come on! This fucking guy was able to get all the way to the other side of the country before he was eventually caught again. When you see how arrogant he was, and how he talked about things, even defending himself in court, and turning on his own counsel, it's jarring that this could occur. What's worse were all of the "fangirls" they interviewed coozing over Bundy as though he was a sex symbol. Unbelievable.
