Is the food really that good? A street cart vendor getting michelin status?

I completely second the suggestion of skipping Sentosa - not my kind of place at all. If you do choose to go, I wouldn't bother with Universal Studios. It's not all that big and you'll waste a lot of your precious time queuing.

Chinatown is worth a visit but I prefer Little India and Kampong Glam (the Malay 'district') for food and authenticity. They're all relatively close together.

The best places for chilli crab are said to be East Coast Lagoon food centre (very close to where I stay and not so far from the airport) and Newton (which I believe is the hawker market they visited in the movie). I prefer black pepper crab myself and yes, it is quite a pricey dish. It's worth trying, but there are plenty of inexpensive Singaporean delicacies which I prefer over it.

As mentioned, MRT and bus travel is very cheap and efficient. Taxis and grab cars are plentiful and inexpensive too.

If you make it to Gardens by the Bay do check out the Cloud Forest. It's pretty spectacular and satisfyingly cool, too.

I just watched the movie this afternoon, wasn't really impressed (too predictable). I have a question for you, does everybody in Singapore have a 'British' accent?

Nope! Maybe some who studied in UK or go to International schools. Though the english here has British influence and not American (like words, spelling, dates etc.)

Thanks. I thought it was weird that 90% of the people had a British/English accent (fake or not).

@rudely_murray wow can't believe almost like a year has past since we first posted in this thread. So the big news is it looks like we are coming to Singapore this summer! We are actually on a cruise that stops in Singapore on a Thursday at 7AM and stays until 6PM. So thats about realistically 8 hours or so, since we'll probably be eating breakfast on the ship to save money. But our goal is to eat chili crab and try some of the best food stalls at Hawker centers and get some good photos maybe across from MBS and the Botanical Gardens?

Go to Gardens by the Bay instead, it's just beside MBS. They have the waterfall that's very similar to the new one at Jewel Changi. Botanical Gardens is in a different area and since you only have 8 hours...I normally would recommend Botanical if staying in SG for 3 days or more.

What would be the easiest/cheapest way to get around to do all of this? Would taxi be best? How much do those run? They speak English over there right? We were even thinking to ride a few rides at Universal too if its close by but that would be the least of our goals. Do you happen to know how far all of this would be from the cruise port?

Your cruise will be at Harbourfront? Sentosa is easily accessible from there just take the monorail. If you have been to Universal Studios in US, skip this one lol it's smaller. Sentosa is very touristy, besides Universal there's casinos, (fake) beach, wax museum etc. You can check out Luge ride at Sentosa, quite fun though short. Really depends what you like to do, if you want more culture or local neighbourhood - skip Sentosa hehe. Go to Chinatown (food trip!) or Haji Lane, Little India.

Cheapest would be to take mrt(train), assuming you'll go around central area, very convenient. There's bus/mrt pass that's unlimited for 1 day for tourists. I know Changi airport sells them, check online if your cruise port have those. You can also download GRAB and just book grabcar when tired from walking - easiest way if you feel lazy.

Thanks! PS: Someone else told us that chili crab costs about $90 USD is it really that expensive? Damn it better be good if it really cost that much lol.

Yes & no. Depends where you go. Iirc at Lau Pa Sat it was around S$80, good for 3-4 pax. It was only 2 crabs but man the sauce was so good! Use the mantou (mini fried bread buns) and scoop the sauce - very satisfying!

Enjoy your trip! grinning Not sure where you're from but be prepared for the heat or maybe rain. And bring tissue!

Wow thanks yeah everyone keeps telling us that its way too hot and humid right? Is it ok to wear tank tops and shorts there? Or do the frown upon that? I usually wear like Basketball jerseys and basket ball shorts when on vacations. I live in California but its like a pretty mild heat here since we are by the pacific ocean and we have a dry desert and mountains as well. Definitely not a tropical humid area here.

I was hoping to walk from the cruise port to GBB and just take pics from the outside of that and MBS kind of like a selfie of me with GBB in the background and MBS in the background and not even waste time or pay to enter either. Then go to Lau Pa Sat for Chili Crab. Like i guess I'll be willing to pay $100 for chili crab if its truly delicious but not really aiming to pay for anything else just walk around and get amazing skyline pictures of me standing in front of MBS or GBB.

The reason why I was even considering Universal was because here in LA is the original one and I went to Orlando which is a larger version and the employee at Orlando said the mummy ride in Singapore is the best one. Outside of that I don't really need to go. But I don't see how the Singapore mummy ride can be that much superior right? LOL.

Does the monorail go from the cruise port to GBB, and Lau Pa Sat? If so that seems like the easiest cheapest way right?

Its not like im dying to ride the mummy ride but I just thought if there's time why not. But yeah after hearing you saying its not a great theme park at all then I don't have to go there.

So yeah my main goal is to eat delicious chili crab I'm willing to spend $100 on it but I don't want to spend much money on anything else. Id rather just take pics outside of GBB and MBS and have a few bites at the best food stalls and then just walk around and head back to the cruise.

Oh yeah also do we have to tip? Like drivers? waitress, etc? Do they accept USD?

JESUS.MURRAY WENT TO SINGAPORE FOR THE FOOD BUT STAYED FOR THE LADYBOY ASS.

Mr. Man,

Lucky you being able to visit such an interesting place. But I have a question (mummy ride aside), why would you travel over 8,000 miles & spend any of your time at a 'theme park'?

Also, don't feed the pigeons, jaywalk, litter, & remember to always flush!

Yeah its a cruise so Singapore is one of the ports we will be hitting. Im actually a big theme park, roller coaster/ride guy. Something about theme parks takes me back to being a kid again and its just an over all nostalgic fun exciting feeling i don't know how to describe it. But yeah seeing that I only have 8 hours in Singapore I don't think id waste any of them being stuck in line at a theme park unless it was like the worlds tallest or fastest roller coaster or something record breaking?

I remember they are real strict there with their laws, ill remember to be on my best behavior lol

What are the other 'ports of call'?

The MRT should bring you close to all of those other than East Coast - that would be a fairly short and inexpensive taxi ride, but I may skip that as it really comes alive in the evening.

Tank tops and shorts are absolutely fine. As already mentioned, stay hydrated with lots of water, use plenty strong suncream and you'll be fine.

_> Oh yeah also do we have to tip? Like drivers? waitress, etc? Do they accept USD? _

No, we don't really tip here. Singapore dollars or credit cards only, I'm afraid.

DAMN I was going to bring a bunch of $1 USD like 300X $1 USD for this trip and just use them all up in all the foreign countries. that sucks though if you say they don't accept USD then I'm have to use my credit card then right? Does the MRT and food stalls accept credit card then? That seems like a burden for a whole cruise to convert USD to singapore dollars just for 8 hours?

Damn stay hydrated? LOL use plenty of sunscreen? Its like we going into the Sahara Desert or something? LOL

Any best place for a singapore sling? I always wanted to try that since seeing the Tom Cruise movie Cocktail!

MRT accepts credit cards but food stalls won’t, unfortunately. I’d certainly make sure i had some currency for sundries. Taxis etc will accept cards.

The Raffles Hotel is the original home of the Singapore Sling and while it’s expensive, the ambience there is pretty special -worth it for that.

You can tip if you want but not required like in US. Better change your cash to SGD if eating in hawkers. You can use credit cards for cabs and shopping.

It's okay to wear shorts & tanktops - that's normal clothes here since it's hot. I warn about weather cos my visitors from US & Canada are still surprised at how it's so hot which makes them tired faster when touring. The Mummy ride at USS is cool but the queue may be longer than the actual ride so not worth it you're only here for a few hours.

The monorail is only from Vivo Mall (Harbourfront where cruises are) to Sentosa. MRT is all over Singapore, you can google the map or download MyTransport app.

Just go to Bayfront where MBS is, go to the highest level and from there you can walk to Merlion via Helix bridge while enjoying photos of skyline etc. GBB is also walking distance from there, you can take lots of photos of view of MBS and those avatar looking trees - that where they shot the wedding reception of CRA. It's free there, only if you want to go inside domes then you have to pay. From there you can Grab (if tired) or take train to Lau Pa Sat and eat to you heart's desire lol. If you will eat there - eat satay with cold tiger beer! grin

If you go to Raffles for your Singapore Sling, just across is Chjimes where they shot the wedding scene when Rachel was surrounded by paparazzis.
