Discuss The Little Stranger

I have no idea why such a good cast ended up ploughing through this load of garbage. There is no story - only ominous suggestions that are never expanded upon acted out in badly lit locations with no explanations for anything. Years ago a little boy was impressed by a big mansion - he grows up to be a doctor and visits the mansion (yeah - remember those days when doctors used to do home visits) because a servant girl is scared to live downstairs. There is something in the house that "hates" the entire family. It never says who or why - we are left to assume it is the mothers third child who died young - don't know how. There is some sub plot about treatment for the brother which seems irrelevant and the sale of land also irrelevant - however the doctor continues to visit and sets his sights on the surviving daughter (the excellent Ruth Wilson). He takes her out to a dance - she seems to have a LOT of dresses for a dowdy housebound woman - and - well - nothing really. He proposes marriage - she accepts - then - well - changes her mind. No explanation given. We assume it's because her mother would not approve. Stuff happens to the mother - apparently ghosts can cause physical injury - or maybe not. I wont tell the end because you probably wouldn't care anyway.
