This movie is so underrated. Casey Affleck in maybe the best performance of his career. Magical!

It really is. I always thought it to be Pitt's best film. The narration is very nice.

This is an issue with a lot of 21st Century movies and TV shows. And yes, my hearing is just fine. And no, I don't have any problems with older films.
Mostly it seems to be actors mumbling, combined with a lack of balance with the soundtrack and foley. Crank up the volume to hear the dialog and you are deafened by the latter.
Film makers forget that they already know the dialog and don't need additional cues to understand what is being said.
