Wow... Such a beautifully shot movie. I wish I could watch it in theatre again.

I agree... the cinematography is wonderful (I especially love the train scene during the night), and so are the performances and soundtrack. This is one of my favorite movies... I want to see it again now!
Andrew Dominik's documentary about Nick Cave, 'One More Time With Feeling', is also very beautiful by the way.

That whole train sequence was incredible... from the rumbling tracks, the movement of light across the trees illuminating the gang to the silhouette of Jesse James against the steam...
Roger Deakins was really showing off and it worked for the movie as well...

The problem is, it's just so long.

I agree. Sure the movie is beautiful and the acting, except perhaps Pitt's, is first rate, but the story, such that it is, is told in such a pedestrian way. I get it that they were after a Ken Burns' Civil War vibe, particularly with the narration, but I think it falls flat here. You can be understated when describing the cataclysms of the Civil War, but here we have entire hours of Pitt doing a variation of Joe Pesci in Goodfellas, while the other guys look nervously back and forth wondering if they will make it out of the scene alive. It's too flimsy a premise to hang a movie of this length on, particularly when the life and death of James is actually very interesting.
They actually managed to make a good story dull. But yeah, looks good.
