Re-watching this one again after years. I found this to be stranger than I remembered. So interesting to see a gambler with an addiction to it get bored when he's winning. But when he loses it seems to pump life into him despite the danger of coming up with the money. The film is overflowing with great character actors of the time from M Emmet Walsh to James Woods. Not glamorous at all. And Caan does carry the film. Without his cock-sure energy he character would be quite unlikable and annoying. Lauren Hutton doesn't offer much here but everyone else in the film is just aces. Paul Sorvino and Burt Young being standouts. Some may call it the original Uncut Gems but I would disagree. This is much quieter but just as unnerving.
