Gotta say i enjoyed this movie a lot. It stood true to the sci fi horror movies like Aliens that started it all. I think it deserves to be another classic.

My sister (who is a cinephile like ME) saw it on $5 Tuesdays and messaged me right away REALLY surprised how good it was...she didn't want to tell me much saying the trailers don't do it justice...wish I can go see it, but its out of theaters most places near me.

a box office does not mandate if a movie is good or not. i simply enjoyed it, even saw it twice. what was there not to like?

80 mil budget on this crap? looks like 79 mil went to salaries and marketing. One of the worst I've seen recently, both the screenwriter and the directer have really poor cinematic education and managed to collect all the stupid cliches from few "creature" movies and construct from them huge piece of crap. Probably rich kids from industry parents that gave them money so they won't sit at home. What a world.

My IMDb review:
Studio: "Let's attach some edgy actors to this middling project, spend 80 million on it, and hope audiences don't notice we completely neglected character development or an interesting plot that has even a hint of originality."
Here we have a protagonist we get to see for a mere few minutes before we're thrust headlong into disaster. At that point, we know absolutely nothing about the characters and we're supposed to care about their struggle to survive.
I don't think so.
Not to mention the Mariana Trench has more than 1,000 times the standard atmospheric pressure at sea level and we're supposed to believe humans can walk around down there with suits on.
Go back to screenwriting school.

It's basically Alien but - underwater. Get it? Under-water (how clever). Nothing new here whatsoever minus 2 sh!ts given about the characters since we never get to learn who they are.

i agree that character development is very crucial for a movie, hence all the classics. but, i didnt completely hate Kristen, nothing in the movie made me hate her per say. Maybe i just enjoy any throwbacks to the first two Alien movies, specially in high budget. The corridors, the hallways, the suits, the creatures, and the fight for survival were enough for me to just ride it all out with a smile on my face. There was even a little wannabe face hugger creature, which i thought was kinda cheap lol

I never mentioned her beyond the fact that she's the lead and leading an audience into an adventure when we don't know who the f.uck she is.
I approach every movie the same way. If they don't bother with character development, they lose me especially when they basically copy another movie, yawn.

Tbh, I agree with OP, this film is a really underrated little cracker. If you're willing to suspend disbelief that there's a massive kraken-like alien creature 7 miles under the sea, I think it's fair to suspend disbelief when it comes to the guys wandering around down there, even if it is against the science of it. Incidentally, on that front, there's a phenomenal piece in The Atlantic on this very subject, it's fascinating: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/01/20000-feet-under-the-sea/603040/
Anyway, I went in with no expectations (other than that it's a Eubank film and in general, I'm a fan), and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It reminded me of Pandorum, but under the sea instead of in space. Obviously OP parallel to Alien is somewhat fair too.

The problem here is the 'deja-vu' feeling of all these underwater flick movies. These time the 'thing' is really big but no change from all other movies. Anyway it is watchable to the end.

Underwater has been on my watchlist for ages as I do enjoy a good monster survival horror film. Its 4/5 stars for me with my biggest issue being that it's very derivative of almost every other film in that sub genre. But that's also why I kind of like it so I'm not necessarily complaining. The film is exactly what you think it will be when it comes to the general story and tone, although the production design and cgi is much better than you would have thought. Stewart was great imo but I have to wonder what specifically made her choose this role.
