Obviously the mechanism had to exist because they had to be able to do that for the escape at the end, but since Leonov had that to start with, why not use that to connect with Discovery as soon as they arrived? Seems like it would have made more sense than that "corridor" thing they used. Only thing I can think of is they wanted to be able to show both in the movie for the "oh, wow!" effect.
