Discuss 2010

I absolutely love 2010, just as much as 2001, but for a different reason. 2001 was more awe-inspiring, it was thematically a different beast. 2010 was more nitty gritty, doesn't stand up to test of time as well, but had some great scenes and a great plot. I'd take this movie over any of the newer SciFi movies released recently, such as Gravity, Interstellar, Martian.

Also, this may sound blasphemous, but there's a few movies that exist that I think could do with a remake. Two of those, remade into one, would be 2001 and 2010. Really, the two movies are complete compliments of each other, and at least plotwise, can't stand on their own without the other. A modern treatment of the two, into a 3-hour movie, would do so much to bring this awesome story to new generations, who may be reluctant to view either 2001 because of its perceived "artsy fartsy-ness" or 2010 because it may be seen as an 80s B-flick.

I respectfully disagree. They are two very different films with massively different story structures. I really like both films but for very different reasons... I feel that 2001 you can get lost in - in a nice way, 2010 has a good basic story and a lead character you can get involved in.

I love 2001. I also think 2010 is a very good sci-fi film as well, just more commercial and straight-forward, narratively-speaking.

I agree that 2001 is a bit cold and the characters in 2010 are more relatable. I love both films though.

2001 should NEVER be remade. Ever. Touch up some of the matte paintings, perhaps, but don't ever remake it!

I DO NOT think 2010 should be remade at this time. It would end up being an inferior film that cantered to commercial appeal rather than artistic value. Instead of something like Europa Report or Moon or Solaris, we'd end up with The Red Planet or Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.

However, in the hands of an uncompromising and brilliant director, given carte blanche, a 2010 remake could be brilliant. But realistically, it's not happening in the current Hollywood environment.

And of course, in the 2001 remake, Poole and Bowman would "have to be" lovers...
