Discuss Dune

YouTube video Fuck the writers. Liet being the father of Chani is of extreme importance to the patriarchal nature of the freemen and the masculine versus feminine themes of Frank Herbert's work. It's almost as if this screen writer completely misunderstood the points being made in the novel about the broader impact on society. Villeneuve should have said no. If anyone has read any of the books you know how powerful the females are in this world. You dont need to add a random gender/race swap to 'modernize' the story since the fucking story was way ahead of its time!

I would rather quote that comment (it's far down, buried deep into the silly same comments):

The fact that y’all are upset by this gender/race swap and not the exclusion of Arabic actors, in an obviously Arab influenced story, says mountains about where all of your beliefs on race lie. Get out of this fandom, cause it ain’t for y’all.

I've read the book, this gender swap is of zero consequences to me, and the actress is doing a superb job.

Yeah, Im sure they want Arab actors doing a multi planetary Jihad and wiping out 61 billion people in the name of a false prophet along with 40 different religions that were wiped out as well. Im glad you like the gender swap but many fans dont. And Im more pissed off that Villeneuve went along with it. Dont get wrong, Im going Friday night and Im sure its going to be amazing but it still grinds my gears.

That's a very fair point I guess, there's already so much Islamic words in the material, it was probably the safer choice (though they do feel under-represented, sadly).

Agreed. This would have been a good opportunity for some Arab actors to get introduced to American audiences. And best of all it would have gone with the source material.
