Annnnnnnd it happened. WW Pushed So I guess we will be getting Dune in 2021 now.

I don't know all the ins & outs of the movie biz, so why would moving WW change when Dune is released?

Both are WB films and it's not financially sensible to compete with yourself.

A lesser known adaptation of a book up against a superhero movie... I'll leave you to figure that out.

Lesser known where? The jungles of New Guinea? Honestly who needs another 'superhero' movie? Why can't WW release in October like it was planned? And Dune in December?

I'd imagine most kids today would never have heard of Dune. Them being a huge part of today's cinema audience. And Dune is already a massively risky prospect in today's climate even without the current pandemic. Just look at how much money the last Denis Villeneuve sci-fi lost. Blade Runner 2049 was critically loved and generally adored by the more ponderous of cinema goers. But it flopped big time. I imagine Dune to be of a very similar ilk to that film and though I'm really looking forward to it and want it to do well I really fear that it is cursed to a similar fate. And as I hear Dune is to be split into two films, we may never get to see part 2. Going up against WW would be cinematic suicide.

Well, I'm pretty sure that Timothée Chalamet & Zendaya will pull in some of the young folks, maybe not millions but who knows?

By that logic why don't they just make one movie a year? That way, no competition?

Are people expecting WW to do well? I personally do not like 'superhero' movies (except Hellboy2004) & haven't they flooded the market with them the last few years? Isn't the main market for a superhero movie males between 16-35 (give or take)? Do they really want to see a woman superhero, unless she is naked part of the time?

The old capitalism machine. Make the absolute maximum amount of money that you possibly can.

Are people expecting WW to do well?

Yes, the first one did very well. And it was quite good. This one is set in the 80s and the 80s is very much all the rage today. Set a film in the 80s and it'll draw people like chavs to a motor show. It's worked on me, I'm guilty, it's brainwashed me and got me excited for it.

One of the reasons superhero movies do well is because they are generally suitable for the entire family. So they draw quite a broad age range (and all 17 of today's genders). And they have become very embedded in the culture today. I agree there are too many made and they should cut down and allow some variety but in a world run by the capitalist machine that isn't gonna happen until they fall out of fashion. In fairness a lot of them are pretty well made and do turn out to be quite fun, but as Spielberg said- "superhero movies are the modern Western, and like the Western, one day they will no longer be with us."

Do they really want to see a woman superhero, unless she is naked part of the time?

I don't see why not. Women are being better represented in many different films and tv shows today so why should the superhero genre be any different? And while, yeah the suit is quite revealing, I and most others would probably be watching it if it wasn't. Though it... y'know, it helps.

Hell, I've got an 18 year old Japanese English student who's planning to watch it, and currently reading the book (in English) for no other reason than her huge crush on Timothy, and this is in Japan proper.

I take it you guys know about David Lynch's dissatisfaction with his version of Dune and the whole "Alan Smithee" thing.

I wanna know what Zendaya's character's function is in this version. I don't remember a Chani from Lynch's film (which I watched).

Shes not going to be in this one very much. If I had to guess she probably filmed her scenes in less than a few days. Not to mention this film stops right after they meet since the film will be split in two.

Chani was played by Sean Young in Lynch's version. She played a big part in Lynch's version.
