Discuss Minions: The Rise of Gru

Wow! Due to COVID19 and shelter in place orders in most states Illumination Entertainment has pushed Minions: The Rise of Gru back an entire year! Many summer 2020 release dates are in limbo right now (April 2020) and there are sure to be more delays and shake-ups as studios scramble to find another release date. We could see more studios releasing VOD (video on demand) and in theaters at the same time like Trolls World Tour plans to. We will see if their strategy pays off, literally. Their success or failure may strongly influence how studios choose to pivot in 2020 and 2021. Stary up to date with upcoming animated movies release dates on Featured Animation.

So I saw this last night. I thought it was very entertaining, and better than the second and third Despicable Me movies, as well as the 2015 Minions movie. I would put the original Despicable Me (2010) just a shade above it.

I really liked how-- as opposed to Despicable Me 2 and 3 --Minions: The Rise of Gru, much like the original Despicable Me, was geared to entertain children while simultaneously taking itself just seriously enough that adults would enjoy it, too. In other words, a truly "family" movie.

And the graphics/animation/CGI was outstanding. I can imagine someone freezing many of the frames just to pause and appreciate the artistry that went into their extremely detailed composition-- the sequences involving the dragons in Chinatown, especially.

And that special language that the Minions have-- seems to be primarily Spanish, but to my ear I think there are other Romance languages in there as well, I think I caught some Italian and maybe some Portuguese --was, as always, precious.

A good family film that I think most folks will enjoy.
