Yeah. The whole thing made zero sense. It was awful. Like some Korean TV drama writer watched The Assassin, had a weird fever dream about it and then decided to make film about it but was lobotomized before he picked up his camera.
And people rave about Oldboy which to my mind is probably just as nonsensical.
I remember watching Oldboy based on the great reviews it was getting when it was released. It had one of the dumbest endings of any movie I've seen, even today. I'm sure they have decent movies in Korea but the ones that seem to get international attention are awful. I wonder if it's a cultural thing I just don't get.
THAT ending is the standby ending for unoriginal writers. It's what they pull out of their as5es when they write-as-they-go and want to shock an audience out of their stupor. THAT ending is little more than an attempt to "wow them in the end" without putting the work in and crafting a screenplay that IS compelling while also making sense.
I tend to avoid Asian movies in general because they often feature infuriating logic violations and I think it's a very hipster thing to call Oldboy a "masterpiece."
