Die 19jährige Lily Mars hält sich nicht nur für eine enorm talentierte Schauspielerin, sie will es auch sofort beweisen, deshalb belagert sie den Sohn ihrer Nachbarin, John Thornway, einem erfolgreichen Theaterproduzenten, der mit dem Autor Owen Vail und der angesehenen Darstellerin Isobel Rekay ein neues Stück namens "Let me dream" plant. Lily, die durchaus mit Gesangstalent versehen ist, bringt eine ganze Feier durcheinander und hinterläßt bei John großen Eindruck, wenn auch nicht wegen ihres Talents. Auf den Rat ihrer Mutter hin reist Lily nach New York - per Anhalter und schleicht sich in Johns Produktion. Dort bemüht sie sich um die Rolle einer Chortänzerin. Jetzt wird John das Mädchen gar nicht mehr los - und will das vielleicht auch nicht mehr..
