Oldenburg, 1948: For Margaret Oelkers (Uhl) and her two little sons, the pension is not enough as a war-wittwe behind and in front. But the authorities are working hard, not even because of their lack of credentials on the employment of their killed in the war. After an energetic appearance at the office, she is briefly put into the psychiatry of the Wehnen nursing home as a trainee. The consequences are bitter: one attests to their schizophrenia, takes away the children and brings them to the sister in the country. For a year, Margarete was kept in the hospital against her will, and forced to do so with electric shocks. En 1948, dans le nord de l'Allemagne, Margarete Oelkers travaille comme couturière. Depuis la mort de son mari au front, ses maigres revenus suffisent à peine à assurer sa subsistance et celle de ses 2 enfants. Lorsqu'on lui refuse sa pension de veuve de guerre, Margarete provoque un esclandre et l'ancien responsable de son mari, le docteur Ahrens, la fait interner à l'hôpital psychiatrique de Wehnen pour schizophrénie.

1948 kämpft die junge Mutter Margarete Oelkers in Oldenburg um ihre Kriegswitwenrente. Dafür benötigt sie Papiere über die Dienstzeit ihres Mannes im Gesundheitsamt. Doch die junge Frau stößt überall auf verschlossene Türen. Als ihr auf dem Fürsorgeamt der Geduldsfaden reißt und sie randaliert, wird sie mit der Diagnose Schizophrenie in die Heil- und Pflegeanstalt in Wehnen eingewiesen. Nach ihrer Entlassung kämpft sie um das Sorgerecht für ihre beiden Söhne und ihre Rehabilitierung. Dabei stößt sie auf ein ungeheuerliches Geheimnis. Das Nachkriegsdrama "Ich werde nicht schweigen", beruht auf wahren Tatsachen.
