One of the more distinctive types of Hollywood movie popular in the 1950s was the melodrama, generally epic in length, invariably set in a small town, featuring an all-star cast involved in plot goings-on that would today be more commonly seen on TV soap operas and usually including a scene set at a Labor Day picnic/country fair or similar festivities.
Peyton Place, Picnic and my personal favourite Some Cane Running are among the prominent examples of this sub-genre . I guess the films of Douglas Sirk also skirt with many of the same tropes.
What other examples are there of this very time-specific set of movies?
