Spiderman and other superheroes (Superman, Wonder Woman, etc.) hide their true identities, while others (like the Fantastic Four) have no problem about revealing their identities to the public.
Is there some reason to this difference, or is it simply a whim of the creator - to decide whether the specific character prefers to hide its identity or not?

Many superheroes had lives to lose and families to put in danger if their secret got out. The Fantastic Four were already very adventurous even before they had powers so revealing their identities didn't change anything. It took Tony Stark a long while before he revealed he was Iron Man in the comics. Captain America never really had a choice in the matter.

Iron Man use to have a secret identity. But right before the 2008 movie came out. Iron Man revealed his identity because that stupid Civil War event. Trust me the movie was way better. Then they just added it to the movie.
