Alice returns to her fathers farm after his death because he had promised it to her?

Question 1- he didn't own the farm - he was only a tenant - so how could he promise it to anybody. Question 2 - why was her brother so hostile to her? She was the victim. Question 3 - Why indeed did he do nothing to help her in the past? Question 4 - Why was he arrested for what was obviously an accidental shooting? Question 5 - why chase a dog with a shotgun when it had left the sheep behind? Question 6 - Why would Alice return to a place where she had experienced such unhappiness? Question 7- Where and when was this film set? The film was well acted - but the plot was really one question and one answer and the rest was pretty much padding.
