I read somewhere that Up the Down Staircase was the best film ever about the teaching experience. Not just a film set in a school, but a film about what it is like to be an inner city school teacher. I finally watched this great film, and I completely agree!
It is gritty, realistic, and very frank at times. It is FAR superior to To Sit with Love, or Dead Poets Society. Sandy Dennis is such an incredible actress. I really liked her in this role. She should be more famous than she is, and it’s easy to see here why she is such a celebrated theater actress and an Oscar winner too!
Do track this film down. It is a forgotten gem but well worth seeing.

She did quite well before she died. She appeared on TV, on Broadway & in the movies.
