I agree it's unnecessary but I think the studio just wants to cash in on American filmgoers by making a version that is more palatable to the average person.

Probably to get us suckers to see it to compare it to the original.

On a good note, I checked the IMDb page and it looks like Gareth Evens is credited as a writer so maybe he can ensure that some justice is done to the movie

I think he's just credited as writing the original film/characters, while some mercenary screenwriter was hired to do this remake. I doubt Evans has much say in this one. :(

Hopefully he gets something made of his own soon - The Raid 2 is hands down the best action film of the last few years.
