At the end of the Spanish civil war, Fando, a boy of about ten, tries to make sense of war and his father's arrest. His mother is religious, sympathetic to the Fascists; his father is accused of being a Red. Fando discovers that his mother may have aided in his father's arrest. Sometimes we witness Fando imagining explanations for what's going on; sometimes we see him at play, alone or with his friend Thérèse. Oedipal fantasies and a lad's natural curiosity about sex and death mix with his search for his mother's nature and his father's fate. Will Fando survive the search?

Après la guerre d'Espagne et sous le régime franquiste, Fando, un garçon d’une dizaine d’années, cherche à comprendre pourquoi son père a disparu. Il ne tarde pas à découvrir que c’est sa mère, pieuse catholique, qui a dénoncé son mari antifasciste. Perturbé par ces révélations, Fando va enquêter pour savoir ce qu’est devenu son père. Dans un pays cadenassé par la censure et les interdits religieux, Fando, partagé entre haine et amour pour sa mère et l’espoir de retrouver son père vivant, va enfanter autant de délires sexuels que morbides…

Spanien zur Zeit des Bürgerkriegs: Der Vater des kleinen Fando wird aufgrund seiner kommunistischen Überzeugung von Soldaten verschleppt. Fando lebt mit Mutter, seiner Tante Klara und den Großeltern in einem von religiöser Symbolik, unterdrückter Sexualität und Angst vor dem faschistoiden Regime geprägten Alltag. Eines Tages entdeckt er einen Brief, in dem seine Mutter zugibt, den Vater an die Militärs verraten zu haben. Fando beginnt sich gegen die Bigotterie seiner Umwelt aufzulehnen.

To historia chłopca o imieniu Fando, którego ojciec zostaje skazany na śmierć za przeciwstawienie się władzom podczas wojny domowej w Hiszpanii. Matka Fando jednak twierdzi, że ojciec chłopca nie został zabity, lecz popełnił samobójstwo. Dwunastoletni chłopiec nie mogąc wytrzymać presji matki, kościoła i szkoły ucieka do świata fantazji.

Al final de la guerra civil española, Fando, un niño de diez años, intenta encontrarle sentido a la guerra y a la detención de su padre. Su madre es religiosa y simpatizante de los fascistas, y su padre fue acusado de ser rojo.
