Paul Delamare (Claude Piéplu) es un diputado municipal francés muy ocupado con su cargo, viaja constantemente a París y su mujer Lucienne (Stèphane Audran) se siente abandonada. Además Paul es impotente. Clotilde Mauri (Clotilde Joano), casada con Pierre (Michel Piccoli), sufre una enfermedad desde hace años que lógicamente le ha amargado su carácter, siendo una mujer totalmente distinta de la que Pierre se enamoró. Cuando Lucienne y Pierre se conocen se sentirán irremediablemente atraídos y acabarán manteniendo una fogosa aventura extramatrimonial.
