Paul Schrader thought Season Hubley was too pretty to play Niki

That was interesting and something I didn't know. He said in the commentary of 'Hardcore' his first choice was Diana Scarwid, who played Christina Crawford in 'Mommie Dearest' to play Niki. I'm sure he didn't mean it that way, but it was like he was saying Diana Scarwid was ugly enough to play a streetwalker and sex-worker and Season Hubley wasn't. The studio head wanted Season so that's who he had to hire. Porn star, Marilyn Chambers, also said she tried out for the role of Niki but was turned down because she looked too wholesome to play a prostitute.

Very interesting.
I thought Hubley was excellent here, the best performance in the film. I never thought she seemed out of place or ‘too prerty’ but she really nailed the part and her final scene is rather moving.
