... earplugs in his ears? I don't remember if he was tied also at chest or neck, but i tried it at home and even with just hands and legs tied it seem impossible, especially considering only one side of armchair was broken.

Seemed perfectly doable as both his chest and neck weren't tied. Now i am on the rusty side physically but i attempted this and i was able to pull it off very easily. If you watch the scene again you will notice that both sides of the armchair were scratched.
