I'm not sure about anyone else but I would make it more clear somehow that the in quotes racists cop was not really racist but maybe have him ask for both Chris and rose's I.d. for security reasons or had the white people who are possessing the black people gain the empathy of the black people somehow. I also have this strange fan fiction idea of rose having a non identical twin sister who is somehow the most moral of her family despite outing Chris in an alternative reality where he is free in his mind just to appear to have family loyalty and she would do anything to get out of the house and not be locked up somewhere

Where did you get the notion that All White people are bad from this movie?

Could have had the white cop from earlier in the film (the cop appearing after the deer collision, seemingly being racist wanting to see ID etc) actually be helpful towards the end. He could have played some small part in Chris's eventual escape. Like, maybe even have it turn out he was stalling them after the accident because he was suspicious of HER, not of him. Rose and her family could easily have been on the radar.

it's ok the way it is... no need to overgeneralise and overreact just from one movie... if it was a large trend in a lot of movies of having exclusively bad white people then maybe we'd have to address it as a theme, but that's just not the case...

also, it's not like the movie itself was making the generalisation that all white people are bad... if anything the first half of the movie is a parody of how sensitive a young black man could feel about his race when dating an upper middle class white girl... it's only when the family actually turns out to be body-snaching psychos that we're no longer laughing at the comedy of his oversensitivity...

if we end up doing this with every movie, then all movies will become very bland and will look like cheesy Benetton ads from the late 1990s... with no room for the idiosyncratic, the taboo, the fringe... the art of it will suffer as will culture...

don't turn movies into Public Service Announcements... we're all mature enough to handle it...

It's OK the way it is, yeah, it's an enjoyable film. Could still be OK if it was different in certain ways (better/worse and all a matter of opinion)... Fine to play around with "what if" ideas.

Although I agree with the sentiment of your post generally...

Yeah, the movie is basically taking that horror trope of feeling like the only sane person in a sea of insanity, or in this case starting out- racial disparity. It makes you uneasy because there is no help to be seen among the crazies.

I'm trying to go for an engaging, funny youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance. A review of the movie here- https://youtu.be/Tb0kPow-1D4

All the whites in this film were villains or at the very least, condescending fools and in the case of the aforementioned highway patrolman, subtle bigots. Not bashing, as I was enjoyed the film overall.

Even the blind gallery guy? He seemed like the only decent white person in movie or was he just waiting for transplantation?

This movie was about white people who at the outset did not grow up with or hang around other races too much. In that case you don't see them as people but as causes (or pets it seems) and that is the new kind of racism Peele is bringing up here. I feel like this movie was directly making fun of them. I really don't see it as the movie saying all white people are bad.

i'd make the White Devils even more accurate. this movie played too much with Kid Gloves as far as those sons of bitches are concerned. it's sickening that our PC Culture censors visionary screenwriters in such a way.

i think you guys are bringing in way too much of your own social baggage... there is nothing in the movie to suggest that the Armitages are bigoted... they're just psychos who want a particular kind of body to be transplanted into... did you miss that part?!

all of the supposedly "racial" comments were made in the context of examining the new body or to ingratiate themselves with the victim (the obama stuff)...

There is nothing racist about it... they could have chosen to only go after tall Scandinavian blondes, and all of the comments would have been equivalent, viking blood and whatnot, but that's not what is the fashion at that time...

You guys missed the whole joke of the movie, it's playing with people's perceptions about silly things like cultural appropriation, micro-agressions and a whole host of silly social ticks that the culture increasingly takes way too seriously... so much so that Chris didn't realise what was really creepy until far too late in the movie, he was too focused on a few comments about how fast black sportspeople are... ultimately all of that pales in comparison of the real horror of mind-control and body-snatching psychos!

That's why i think they should have kept the original ending... that would have been the only way to give this movie any real edge and to ground it in a reality that is actually potentially racist... it would force the audience to reckon with the reality and horror of the criminal justice system and such... real, actual, consequences... not physical adoration and mild teasing...

as it is, this movie is so mild... too PC... lacks verve... it really could have touched on something potent, but instead went the coward's way with the hollywood ending and thus we're left, as we are in the culture in general, debating whether or not admiring one's natural abilities is an insult when it involves another ethnicity... absurd

Did the film at least have white "balance characters" in it? A balance character is one that's put into a film to balance out the negative representation of a group caused by a certain character or characters. If a film has an "evil lesbian villain" in it, then a balance character might go in there to portray lesbians or gays in general in a good light.

Don't believe myself presumptuous in stating that damn near everyone here at the boards recognized the role of a "balance character" in a story immediately after reading those words, Satch. Unless of course, Disney decides to resurrect the midichlorian subplot in future Star Wars installments, in which case a character will appear for the express purpose of bringing balance to The Force.

Are you saying that I didn't need to define a "balance character"? How can you speak for anyone else LOL?

I think the concept of "balance characters" is the antithesis of art... we're not impressionable babies watching Disney cartoons... we're adults... we understand that a portrayal is not an endorsement and that a character in a work of art isn't representative of all real people who share it's gender, ethnicity or whatever...

If we require balance characters in our movies then we'll end up with very sterile and bland entertainment... a compromised artform...

It's a work of fiction.. make believe... guess what? my name isn't actually Renovatio!

Maybe you missed my point, Renovatio. erin asked what could have been done to make it seem from the film that all white people aren't bad. I was simply suggesting that a white balance character or more would possibly counter such a perception. I had the best of intentions in defining what a balance character is, by the way.

And a well-placed balance character can help keep a film from demonizing a group, IMHO.
