Discuss Birth of the Dragon

The movie can't seem to decide whether it wants to be a semi-realistic depiction of actual events or a complete fantasy movie. It is based on a fight that has been the subject of much discussion back in the day, but apart from the fact that said fight is in this movie, that is pretty much the only thing that has any factual basis. They portray Wong Jack Man as some kind of peace loving hippy who goes around spreading his infinite Confuscious like wisdom, and the way the movie plays out they make it out that the only reason Wong Jack Man fights Bruce Lee is because he wants to teach him a deep philosophical lesson. For a movie about Bruce Lee, it is kind of strange that most of the screen time is given to his made up kung fu student and his completely uninteresting love affair with a chinese girl. On the other hand, perhaps that is a good thing, because the person playing Bruce Lee seems to be doing an impression of an impression Bruce Lee instead of acting Bruce lee. For some strange reason Bruce fights in this movie like he fights in the movies making those high pitched noices for example and is just one example silliness in this movie. They even had to add a tacky fight scene where Bruce gets cut in the abdomen by some kind of sharp bladed knuckle dusters like he does in the iconic Enter the Dragon scene. He goes through the same routine opening his shirt and tasting his own blood and going into beastmode. It just seemed out of place and corny in a movie that is supposed to have some basis in reality.

I should add that I seriously wonder if the director and other production crew realized the terrible irony in this film. I mean you have a movie more or less about Bruce Lee, but almost all of the focus is given to a made up white person. If you know about Bruce Lee's life and his problems in Hollywood you will understand why it is so tragicomical. Funny thing is that apparently in the original cut the made-up student had an even more prominent role and Lee an even lesser role, but the movie was so poorly received it went through extensive edits. Just utter incompetence and idiocy in my mind.
