What were the dwarves doing with the stones they minded

We saw them check the stones for quality and lock them in a vault, but did they trade with them? Sell to jewellers? Incorporate into dwarven rituals? Leave in the vault for a future generation of dwarves to mine out again?

Nothing, just hanging on to them and occasionally bejeweling something they made, at best. It's right there in the song.
