Discuter de Moonfall

Whilst slogging through this schlock/trope fest that insultingly assumes you have the I.Q. of a stop sign, I thought to myself this question: Is the quality bar in modern day Hollywood actually really low or am I just a jaded old boomer like the kids say and have seen too many films thus it is extremely difficult to surprise me? I actually watched Moonfall and an old noir film from the 1940s called This Gun For Hire back to back. This Gun For Hire was done on what could be regarded as a shoe string budget. There are no exotic locations and no over the top special effects, even for its time. The story is by no means a masterpiece . Pretty mediocre actually but I was able to watch this film in a single sitting. Why? Because I didn't have to stop the film every 5 minutes and moan, "Oh god, gimme an fkn break!" . I have been trying desperately to motivate myself to going back to the movies and watching new films on the big screen and movies like this are not helping. I honestly think that movie theaters are going to go the way of the drive-in if Hollywood keeps pumping out garbage like this. I mean seriously, the producers of this film should be embarrassed to walk around Hollywood.

I guess you can tell by my rant where I stand on my original contemplation and that is it is pretty evident that things are really bad in movieland right now. This is why they rely so heavily on previous mediums because it appears to be damn near an impossibility for anyone to come up with an original story that actually has a modicum of entertainment value for anyone even remotely intelligent. When I say "intelligent" , I am not talking Einstein I am talking a person who is able to tie their own shoes. This film makes me wonder if there is some sort of computational algorithmic software spits out a movie script. I mean it checks off all of the trope boxes. Righteous man gets railroaded, check. Family now hates him and is now estranged from son, check. Car chase scene, check. Boom boom splosions, check. Annoying new husband dies, check. Guy sacrifices himself to save the world. I mean I can go on and on. Hollywood, do better.

Moonfall (2022) - 3 outta 10 stars

SIDE NOTE: "boomer" has been retconned by the kiddies nowadays to mean someone old and out of touch. It doesn't mean what it meant when I was young which was someone from the baby boomer generation which I assure you I am not.

I tend to find that there are good movies being made today, and there were a lot of crap movies made yesteryear.

Jordan Peele has yet to drop the ball - his Nope is in theatres now and reviews are overwhelmingly positive. He is a human and, therefore, not perfect. At some point, he'll fail to hit his standard. But, at this point, he is on his game.

There's only one Tarantino movie I could go the rest of my life without watching again, and that's The Hateful Eight; otherwise, for me, he's as close to Billy Wilder on my list of great directors as any. Speaking of whom, it took a long time for me to come across a Billy Wilder movie I did not love, but it happened! One, Two, Three is a movie I could not get through in one sitting (truth be told, I have not completed a full viewing of this one). But Double Indemnity, The Apartment, The Seven Year Itch, Sabrina? Any/every time they show up on TV, I watch them right through.

Billy Wilder is a GD legend. If he were alive today, as in his prime, he would probably have gotten rich enough to start his own studio. There are hardly any writers in Hollywood today that are as proficient as he was in a ten year period never mind decades. He wrote comedies and noir with equal proficiency. If you haven't seen Stalag 17 I highly recommend it. Damn near perfect film.

I do like the few Peele movies I have watched and I would never hold someone doing a stinker against them. It's damn near impossible to bat 1.000. I also believe The Hateful Eight is Tarantino's weakest film but if you asked that question to my brother he would state it is Once Upon a Time In Hollywood which I quite enjoyed. However, we do agree that Tarantino has also reached legendary status. He has yet to do a real stinker and I think he is scared he might which is why he quotes his ten movie limit. I say fuggit, keep going. Who cares if you do a stinker. However, I doubt Tarantino could do a film as bad as Moonfall if you lobotomized him. Not that he is that great, its the film is THAT bad.

Right?!

One of his absolute gifts - whatever he did, he did excellently. He just knew how to make movies.

Yep, I'm way late giving that highly recommended movie a view.

Indeed.

Me too, I loved OUaTiH.

However, we do agree that Tarantino has also reached legendary status.

You won't be surprised to know (if you didn't already) that Tarantino mentions Wilder among his favourite directors.

I like to see actors/directors reach, take risks, and Ialways go easy on them when they try. For example, Arnie in Twins and Junior, or Bruce Willis in Death Becomes Her and The Bonfire of the Vanities.

However, I doubt Tarantino could do a film as bad as Moonfall if you lobotomized him.

Agree. The guy just knows how to make movies.

Not that is that great, its the film is THAT bad.

And actually those films were pretty good. It could be argued Willis took a chance with Pulp Fiction even though Tarantino had already gained fame at Cannes with Reservoir Dogs he was by no means an established writer/director. I'm not surprised Wilder is one of Tarantino's favorite writer/director. To say Wilder was extremely talented is an understatement.
