With $170 million budget x2 for marketing, and with still not opening in China and Japan yet, will this be a flop? It needs to make around $350 million to meet expectations. With no real competition at the box office, it might be able to do it and of course with the help of China and Japan. So far fans are happy since it seems to stick to the source material extremely well. Something Hollywood isnt known for.

$264,845,019 world wide currently. Dont know how much more they can squeeze out of it domestically but it opened very well in China and Japan.

Its looking like a marginal "hit" vs a straight up flop. It still lacks a market or two, so hoping it makes a tidy profit. This is one of those movies I'm truly CRAVING a sequel for! When those end credits came up I still wanted MORE!!!!!

I know! I read that it was planned as a trilogy from the start, something I dont agree with simply because of the scenario we are in right now. It could get green light for the sequels or shut down. I know Robert Rodriguez and Cameron are ready for one, and Im sure Rosa Salazar is to. But we have to wait and see what the studios say after they add all the money up. Remember not all that income goes back to the studio since it has to be split up. It would be really amazing if the studio says no it didnt make enough and Cameron says fuck it, ill bank roll it!

If it was planned for a trilogy, it will definitely succeed in doing so.

Its at $382,486,555 currently. If it breaks 400 million it might have a chance at a sequel. China is extending its cinema run thru April so it might do it.

Maybe I'm responding with old info, however I've been under the impression for a movie to make a profit; it has to gross double it's budget. The budget for Alita according to IMDB is $170,000,000. It would need $340,000,000 to make that profit. If it's already at $382,486,555; I would have to guess it's already met it's goal for making a profit and would be more than likely be green lit for a sequel.

Knowing how Cameron has done things in the past, we will likely see an Alita rerelease in the fall in a glasses free 3D movie tech that he's releasing with Avatar 2. It is then, that Alita will get a big boost in its numbers.

Yes a film needs its budget x2 for marketing/ad but the studio dosent get all that money. Its split up between cinemas and other parties unfortunately. Realistically Alita needs to make anywhere between 450 and 500 million to be considered a success. But that dosent mean a sequel is out of the question considering its a Cameron passion piece and Im sure he noticed how well it has been received by fans and all the new fans its created.

Fascinating. It will be interesting to see how much your head can move and still be able to see the 3D effect.
